European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
