Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
